RCVS Fees and CPD Support: Check an RVN Job Offer

“RCVS fees paid” and “generous CPD” are useful only when you know who does what, by when, and whether the rota gives you time to use the support. Put five details in writing before you compare offers.

Keep the renewal date and the CPD year separate

An RVN job offer involves two different clocks. RCVS registration renewal for veterinary nurses is due by 1 November, while the CPD requirement runs by calendar year. The RCVS currently requires veterinary nurses to complete 15 hours of CPD plus reflection each year, whether they work full-time or part-time, and hours cannot be carried into the next year. The current RCVS fee table lists an annual veterinary nurse renewal fee of £85 from 1 November 2025 and £89 from 1 November 2026; check the live table again before payment because fees can change. Put both dates in your own calendar rather than assuming an employer reminder will cover them.

Find out exactly how the RCVS fee is paid

Ask whether the employer pays the RCVS directly, reimburses you after you pay, or adds a fixed professional-fees allowance to payroll. Confirm when payment happens, what proof is needed, whether the benefit starts during probation and what happens if your start date falls near 1 November. RCVS guidance says that even when an employer pays, the nurse still has to complete the renewal process personally in MyRCVS. A zero balance may show that a practice payment has arrived, but you should still check your details, declarations and receipt. If you pay the fee yourself and cannot reclaim it from your employer, HMRC may allow tax relief when its conditions are met; use current GOV.UK guidance for your own circumstances rather than treating tax relief as automatic.

Translate “CPD support” into four written commitments

Separate the package into money, paid time, approval and rota cover. Record the annual allowance and what it can buy; the number of paid CPD hours or days; who approves a course and how long approval takes; and who covers your clinical work while you attend. Then ask whether internal teaching, workplace learning and reflection time happen inside paid hours. Current vacancies show why this matters: one live PDSA RVN advert specifies three CPD days, £500 a year, internal programmes and full RCVS-fee payment, while other adverts describe only a general allowance. Neither format tells you whether a particular course or date will be approved, so compare the written mechanism rather than the adjective. Use the wider rota test in /blog/rvn-rota-and-support-job-check to see whether the promised time is usable in practice.

Match development support to work you can actually do

A large allowance is not automatically the better offer. Write down the capability you want to build over the next year—such as anaesthesia, dentistry, nurse consultations, inpatient care, ECC, clinical supervision or leadership—then ask what caseload, equipment, supervision and competency sign-off are available. Confirm whether certificate support includes course fees, study time, assessment costs and a realistic opportunity to use the learning. The RCVS outcomes-focused CPD cycle is plan, do, record and reflect, so access to relevant work and reflection matters alongside course attendance. Use a five-line handover before accepting or leaving

Put these five lines into the offer email or contract: who pays the next RCVS renewal and on what date; the CPD budget period and unused-budget rule; paid CPD time; approval and rota-cover arrangements; and any repayment clause if you leave after funded training. When changing jobs, confirm which employer owns each commitment rather than assuming the old or new practice will absorb it. Keep your own MyRCVS receipt and CPD record, and do not delay renewal while two employers decide who pays. Compare the whole package with /salary-guides/veterinary-nurse-salary, then browse /categories/veterinary-nurse-jobs and /jobs using the same five lines. If the right support is non-negotiable, /job-alerts can help you wait for a clearer offer rather than accepting an undefined benefit.
