Student Veterinary Nurse Jobs: Check Pay, Hours and Training Status
Student veterinary nurse can mean a paid apprenticeship, an unpaid college placement or an employed diploma post. Classify the arrangement before comparing the rota.

Name the arrangement before comparing the rota
Ask the employer and the college to put the vacancy into one of three boxes. A Level 3 veterinary nurse apprenticeship is a paid job in an approved training practice, typically lasting 30 to 36 months, with college or online study built into the working week. A higher-education or full-time diploma placement is clinical training required by the course; some providers describe those placements as unpaid. An employed diploma or day-release post sits in between: you are on the payroll while studying, but the contract is not necessarily an apprenticeship. Current college pages show why the label is not enough. The College of Animal Welfare’s apprenticeship course requires employment in an RCVS-approved Training Practice or auxiliary Training Practice. Its separate placement scheme tells practices that those students are unpaid. Askham Bryan College says it does not run an unpaid volunteer route and that students must already be employed as an apprentice in a training practice. Write the arrangement down before you compare hours, pay or the weekend rota.
Confirm the practice can actually count your hours
RCVS currently requires UK-qualified applicants to complete 2,990 total training hours, including at least 1,800 hours in clinical practice, and to demonstrate Day One Skills and Schedule 3 competence before registration. Hours only count in an approved Training Practice or auxiliary Training Practice. Ask for the practice’s current RCVS training-practice status, the site you would actually work on, and whether unapproved branch days would be excluded. The regulator publishes regional lists of approved small-animal and equine training practices; use those lists to check the named site rather than accepting “we train students” as enough. Also ask who enrols you with RCVS as a student veterinary nurse, who pays the student enrolment fee, and when that enrolment starts. The current RCVS fee table lists student enrolment at £228 until 31 July 2026 and £237 from 1 August 2026, plus a separate qualification fee set by the awarding organisation or university.
Rebuild one week of college, practice and counted time
Draw a normal week and mark college or live-online study, practical skills days, practice shifts, travel, and the hours the employer will record toward the 1,800 clinical hours. CAW’s current apprenticeship is day-release: one theory day a week, in centre or live online, plus around ten practical skills days across the programme. Askham Bryan currently timetables two college days in year one, then a mix of college and remote study in year two, with three practice days a week. Those are provider examples, not a national pattern. Ask whether college days are paid working time, whether overtime or on-call hours are excluded from the training record, and how absence, bank holidays and annual leave are treated. For apprentices, Skills England currently says that from 22 July 2026 the end-point-assessment gateway must confirm the minimum clinical placement time required by the RCVS registration rules, and that completing the full 2,990 hours is no longer a prerequisite for that gateway. That change does not remove the registration-hour requirement; it only changes when an apprentice can enter assessment.
Separate the wage from the course fee
Do not treat “student veterinary nurse” as a pay grade. If you are an apprentice, GOV.UK currently requires at least the apprentice National Minimum Wage: from April 2026 that is £8 an hour if you are under 19, or 19 or over and in the first year. After the first year, an apprentice aged 21 or over is entitled to the National Living Wage, currently £12.71 an hour. The employer must also pay for apprenticeship training and study time. Askham Bryan states that employers must pay at least the current minimum wage, including for off-job learning. If the post is an unpaid course placement of up to one year as a required part of a UK further or higher education course, GOV.UK currently treats that as an exemption from the minimum wage. The exemption does not cover extra work that is not part of the course. Ask which rate applies now, which rate applies after year one, whether college days are paid, who pays RCVS enrolment and awarding-body fees, and whether travel to college is reimbursed. Compare the cash only after those clocks are visible; use the veterinary nurse salary guide to keep annual, hourly and pro-rata figures on the same page rather than treating any one advert as a market rate.
Test named supervision on the shifts you will work
Ask for the named clinical supervisor or clinical coach, their usual overlapping shifts, and what happens when they are on leave or on a different rota. RCVS education standards require every student to have a clinical supervisor who is an RVN or UK-practising MRCVS, experienced, clinically current, trained and annually standardised, with a time allowance for teaching and assessment. Other skilled colleagues may help when the supervisor cannot be present, but that cover has to be documented and auditable. Ask how Day One Skills are signed off, which cases you will actually see, and how the practice records that you stayed within your current competence. You cannot use the title Registered Veterinary Nurse or carry out Schedule 3 procedures as an RVN until you are on the Register. If the vacancy leans on student support as a future duty for you, compare that separately with the clinical supervisor role guide. If the first qualified role is already in view, keep the newly qualified RVN first-job guide for the later comparison rather than mixing the two decisions.
Get the training terms in writing before you accept
Request the employment or placement status, hourly rate and review date, contracted hours, college-day payment, counted clinical hours, named training-practice site, named supervisor, enrolment and course-fee ownership, rota, weekend pattern and what happens if the practice loses training-practice status or you need to change site. Then put the working week against the RVN rota and support check. Use the veterinary nurse career path only after you can see whether this training year leads toward the kind of work you want, not as a reason to accept a poorly specified student post. Browse current veterinary nurse jobs and all jobs, or set job alerts, and classify each student vacancy by arrangement, training-practice status and counted hours rather than by the headline.
